本作品の撮影地である、東京都にある国立療養所多磨全生園は、2020 年 4 月から現在まで、敷地内にある国立ハンセン病資料館を除き、COVID-19 による影響のために、不要不急の立ち入りの自粛を求めています。そこで私は、園内を外から囲っている柊木の垣根やフェンスを見つめました。 柊木の垣根は、当時ハンセン病療養所に住む人々への隔離や脱走防止の役割のために有刺鉄線の代わりとして植えられていたものです。らい予防法下では、柊木の垣根で療養所は囲われていましたが、時代の変遷と共に、一部が伐採され、フェンスに置き換わっています。ノーベル賞作家である川端康成が推薦した文豪の北条民雄の『命の初夜』（1936）はここでの体験が元となっています。療養所は約 35 万平方メートルもの広大な敷地を持ち、当時は療養所を囲うように、高さ3m程の柊木の垣根に覆われていたと言われています。 文・ステートメント 執筆時 2022年3月
From April 2020 to the present, the National Sanatorium Tama Zenshōen in Tokyo, where this was filmed, requested that all non-essential entry to the parks be prohibited due to the effects of COVID-19. The one exception was the National Hansen's Disease Museum. Therefore, I looked at the holly hedge and the fence surrounding the park from the outside. Holly hedges were planted, instead of barbed wire, to isolate and prevent the escape of people living in leprosy sanatoriums at the time. Under the Leprosy Prevention Law, the sanatorium was surrounded by a holly hedge, but as time passed, part of the hedge was cut down and replaced by a fence. Nobel Prize-winning author Yasunari Kawabata recommended the literary magnate Tamio Hojo's work "First Night of Life" (1936), which is based on his experience here. The sanatorium covers a vast area of about 350,000 square meters, and at the time it was surrounded by a hedge of holly about 3 meters tall. Document/Statement Drafted in March 2022

木村 直 Choku Kimura アーティスト・写真家 1998年生まれ。神奈川県出身。東京藝術大学美術研究科先端芸術表現専攻修士課程に在籍。「生活の場としてのハンセン病療養所の記録と継承」と「見ない暴力/見る暴力」を主軸に、写真・映像・インスタレーションを用いて制作活動を行う。
Choku Kimura, Artist/Photographer Born in 1998, in Kanagawa Prefecture. Currently enrolled in the Master's Program in Intermedia Art, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. He works with photography, video, and installations, focusing on "recording and transmitting leprosy sanatoriums as a place of life," and "unseen violence/seen violence."
