約15万枚のバランを用いた平面作品。 バラン。寿司や弁当などの仕切りや飾りなどに使われるプラスチック製のもので、元は葉蘭という実際の植物を使用していたものが、利便性や衛生面の管理を理由にプラスチック製になり、大量生産が可能になったものである。 バランが、仕切り、または飾りとして、実際に機能を果たしているかは不明で、ただ習慣的に、またアイコン的に居続けるバランの存在を、“ものとものの仕切り”という位置関係を問うテーマと重ねて表現した作品。 面を仕切るために生まれたものが、大量に並べられる事でそれ自身が面となり、本来の機能を失う。また特徴的な山と谷のある草を模した形が連なることで立体的な連続する突起へと変わり、バラン群と前に広がる空間に対する新たな仕切りが発生している。 一枚では何かの添え物としてしか成立しえないモチーフが大量に敷き詰められることによって、別の価値が生まれている。
A flat work using about 150,000 pieces of baran. Baran: the pieces of plastic, used as dividers or decoration in sushi and bento boxes. Originally, an actual plant, known as the 'cast-iron plant' was used, but plastic substitutes started getting used for convenience and sanitary management; this also enabled mass production. It is unclear whether baran actually fulfills its function as a divider or decoration, however this work combines its use as a custom or as an icon, with the inquiry of its positional relationship of "a divider between one thing and another thing." When something created to divide a surface is arranged in significant quantity, it becomes a surface itself, thereby losing its original function. Moreover, connecting the characteristic shapes with mountains and valleys that imitate grass, transforms them into continuous three-dimensional protrusions, and a new divider, separating the baran group and the space in front of it, arises. Packing large quantities of a motif, which is to be used only for garnishing, leads to its acquiring another value.
